Building a CMO 2.0 Brand

How does a busy, senior-level executive with an impressive set of skills and a stellar work history make recruiters come to him, and offer the role he wants? Easy. Partner with us at [a]nonymous. Using a strategic mix of content and social media marketing and well positioned PR opportunities, he can make it crystal clear that he is exactly what new employers are looking for in their next, key, hire.

This (very) marketing-savvy executive started working with us in November 2019. With years of varied experience in diverse facets of marketing, he saw the value [a]nonymous could bring to his expertise, and selected our [a]anonymous-accelerated program to build his personal brand while he continued to climb the career ladder in corporate America.

We started with an intense discovery process to: discern who he is, what he believes in, where he wants his career to go, and how he wants to get there, and anonymous built a brand identity for, and with, him. It painted a clear and evocative picture of an executive on the move, a technologist and marketer in demand! With that compelling picture in mind, we created a multi-layered plan to share key facets of that brand with the world.

Content Marketing and Thought Leadership

With a marketable brand identity and plan in mind, first, we provided a comprehensive digital hygiene report. From there we updated or established SEO-friendly social media and content marketing channels — including Twitter, LinkedIn and Medium — to align neatly with his new identity: the CMO 2.0. An upwardly mobile thought leader, and a savvy and talented senior-level executive with extensive experience in a variety of technology and marketing verticals in diverse industries, who wouldn’t want to hire him?

In addition to the digital overhaul, we created a user-friendly website to provide a controlled and dedicated digital presence. We booked our CMO[2.0]-in-waiting for podcasts, speaking opportunities and secured a coterie of bylines in reputable external publications. Then we promoted those opportunities via social media, built a “media” page for his website, and shared targeted commentary on LinkedIn that was guaranteed to attract headhunters’ attention.

Once the discovery and planning was complete, the [a]nonymous team moved into execution mode, and within 6 months of working together our client was no longer seeking out opportunities. He was actively being sought after for CMO positions. Our consistent content marketing activities, everything from retweets to original articles, to hand selected PR opportunities, and social media posts, were selected to appeal to an audience looking for strategic intelligence and thought leadership befitting a CMO — and it worked.

The Headhunter’s Dream

We’ve seen an increase in audience growth boosted by social media activity — there was a 93% increase in audience size on Twitter and a 320% increase in audience size on Medium. We handle everything from posting on social media, writing and editing articles in his voice, pitching them to targeted publications, and our partnership continues to evolve.

He understands digital marketing strategy better than most — after-all, that’s his “thing,” but he values our partnership, our creativity and skill, and places a high value on [a]nonymous’ ability to do all the heavy lifting when it comes to brand building, content development and reputation management. Our partnership gives him the freedom to build his brand, and elevate his status as a thought leader while continuing to excel on the job.

Not only did we build our client a viable, polished, and engaging brand, produce consistent audience engagement with growth across multiple platforms, and build a roster of impressive external clips, we also achieved our goal — different recruiters and headhunters reach out to our client almost every week to present solid offers that he actively entertains. It’s only a matter of time before he achieves his goal to become a CMO.
